Bali is still one of the most popular snorkeling destinations in Indonesia, and for good reason. Travelers will find brilliant reefs of coral, tropical fish and underwater scenery that seems almost unreal, all along a coastline that can’t be missed. Most of the year the water is warm, making it easy for beginners, families, couples and those just wanting a straightforward ocean experience. Snorkeling here can be a real experience with tranquil bays and nearby islands with less disturbed marine life. Nusa Penida is a big stand out. It is famous for its clear water, coral gardens and a variety of sea life. The Crystal Bay, Manta Point and Gamat Bay are particularly well known for fish, turtles and manta rays. Nusa Lembongan offers a more laid-back atmosphere, with peaceful beaches, lagoons and a calmer underwater environment.

Amed is especially suitable for families and beginners. The water is generally very calm, the reef is close to the shore and the shallow spots make those first snorkeling attempts much less stressful. Most visitors make a beeline for the Japanese Shipwreck, but the bright reef patches nearby and the quiet coastline are equally worthy of a look. Within the West Bali National Park, the island of Menjangan feels different. Its reefs of coral are in much better shape than many places in Bali and the marine life there is seriously rich. Most snorkeling trips include the boat ride, snorkel gear, lunch, a guide and stops at more than one site. Some combine this with island hopping, diving, beach time or sunset watching.

Snorkeling is a rare combination of adventure and tranquility, whether exploring the underwater beauty around Nusa Penida, swimming with tropical fish in Amed, or discovering colorful reefs near Menjangan Island, Bali. The marine life is vibrant, the ocean views are hard to ignore and honestly, any island traveler would be remiss to skip it.
