Indonesia's Java Island, the world's most populous island, has its own busy metropolises, fertile land and volcanic summits, resulting in a clear balance of city and landscape.
Java, the globe's most populous island, is a stunning blend of nature and human habitation. It is inhabited by over 150 million humans, even surpassing the world's most populous countries in terms of population density, housing nearly eight times Australia's population on a landmass approximately the size of England. The Indonesian island, approximately 130,000 square kilometers in size, houses an astonishing population density of nearly 1,200 people per square kilometer.
Its capital, Jakarta, is among the world's great mega-cities, and there are about 11 million there. Java boasts more than its vibrant cities, though. It has a beautiful landscape, controlled by huge rainforests, bamboo thickets, and volcanic summits. Volcanoes total 112, with 35 remaining active, and the landscape of Java is as resplendent as it is varied. The highest point of the summit, Mount Semeru, is 12,060 feet (3,676 meters) above sea level and forms a rugged landscape of mountains, ridges, and lowlands.
Java's volcanic soils are responsible for the productive land in the country and make it Southeast Asia's most productive state. There are more than 5,000 plant species here, including mango, banana, sago palm, and teak. The rainforests here are teeming with wildlife with animals including wild pigs, monkeys, crocodiles, and more than 400 bird species. In spite of the wide spread of urbanization, vast parts of Java are still rural, but that is rapidly changing as the island's population increases.
Java has over half of Indonesia's population despite taking up only 7% of the land area of the country. The island's population is predominantly Javanese, Sundanese, and Madurese, and most of them speak Malay languages.
Java has a humid and hot tropical climate throughout the year with a mean 30°C in Jakarta's daily highs. It has a normal rainy season that lasts from November to March, as well as a dry season that happens between April and October. Regardless of the challenge the nature of population density and fast urbanization pose, Java is one area where nature, culture, and development converge.
For those seeking a more tranquil experience during their Bali vacation, Java offers a unique complement. Whether you're admiring ancient temples, trekking through volcanic landscapes, or relaxing in serene surroundings, the island has something for everyone.
