Jakarta: Indonesia is intensifying efforts to develop public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles as demand for the service increases.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is calling on government agencies to work with private companies to speed up the development of public electric vehicle charging stations, or SPKLUs.
“The development of SPKLU will open up business opportunities for various sectors and hopefully will attract more players to join the growing market,” said Wahyudi Joko Santoso, coordinator of smart grid, electric charging and storage development.
The government has issued a roadmap for SPKLU development thru the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 24.K/TL.01/MEM.L/2025 concerning the Development of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for the Period 2025-2030.
The plan would allow the nation to have a faster SPKLU deployment considering their pattern of distribution and technology used.
The roadmap states that SPKLU will be constructed at several locations, including malls, office buildings, industrial areas, highway services areas, gas stations, tourism destinations, hospitals, railroad stations, bus terminals, hotels and seaports.
Indonesia is also set to ease licensing requirements for SPKLU developers. Andi Nur Arief Wibowo, Sub-coordinator for Electric Charging and Storage Development, said expedited business-license procedures would entice more companies to join in the SPKLU development.
The move is expected to support the overall EV ecosystem development in the country, and promote sustainable transportation.
The rising demand for SPKLU has been reflected in electricity consumption data. PLN Retail and Commercial Director M. Fahrur Rozy noted that electricity consumption for public EV charging has reached 62,4 GWh as of June 2026.
That amount of power is already higher than the 48,5 GWh electricity consumed by public EV charging stations in all of 2025.
The spike in demand underlines Indonesia’s EV boom, and the need to expand charging infrastructure. With the government’s roadmap for 2025-30 and the involvement of various business players, Indonesia is determined to make SPKLU proliferation thrive in the country.
