Bali Immigration Sends Interpol-Wanted Ethiopian National Home

Bali, Indonesia (17 October 2023) – The Ngurah Rai Class I Special Immigration Office in Bali, Indonesia, has deported a 29-year-old Ethiopian national identified by initials SMY after immigration officers detected that the individual was subject to an Interpol Red Notice for a fraud offence. 

The man was deported on 15 September 2026 after being arrested in Addis Ababa by officers of NCB Interpol Indonesia. 

Ethiopian National Found at Bali Airport 

SMY was detected on arrival in Bali on a Scoot Tigerair flight on 6 September 2026. 

At Ngurah Rai immigration officers processed the man and subjected him to further checks when they found his name on an Interpol Red Notice for a fraud offence. 

Authorities then contacted NCB Interpol Indonesia and recommended the individual be denied entry into Indonesia. 

The case showed the effectiveness of cooperation between immigration and NCB Interpol Indonesia in processing international fugitives, said Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office Muhamad Novyandri. 

Case on Fraud of ETB 46.4 Million 

Indonesian authorities cited the Interpol Individual Report which stated that the Red Notice against SMY was issued on April 9, 2026. 

The case involves the illegal withdrawal of funds of ETB 46.4 million (around Rp5 billion or US$273,000) in Ethiopia. 

SMY was taken into custody at Ngurah Rai International Airport and arrangements were made for his deportation. 

Escorted to Ethiopia repatriated 

The man had refused to return to Ethiopia and officers from NCB Interpol Indonesia personally escorted him to Addis Ababa, the authorities said. 

On 15 September 2026, SMY was deported from Denpasar to Addis Ababa via Abu Dhabi on an Etihad Airways flight under the direct supervision of NCB Interpol Indonesia officers. 

The case is the efforts of Indonesian immigration authorities in collaboration with NCB Interpol Indonesia in dealing with international fugitives. 

Indonesia Bolsters Cooperation on International Immigration 

"The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office will continue to strengthen cooperation with the National Police’s International Relations Division, NCB Interpol Indonesia and other authorities in the processing of international fugitives,” Novyandri said. 

The office oversees all foreign arrivals and departures within Bali and cooperates with police upon detecting fugitives from international law enforcement agencies. 

The case underscores the role of immigration checks at Ngurah Rai International Airport in identifying persons subject to international Red Notices.
