Bolshoi Ballet gala set for July 28 as Seychelles hosts Bolshoi exhibition

The National Library in Victoria will open an exhibition from Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre Museum on July 28, the first time the museum has shown its collection anywhere in Africa.

The exhibition, titled "Bolshoi Theatre: Through Time," traces the history of the Bolshoi Theatre, founded in 1776 and regarded as one of the world's oldest and most influential ballet and opera companies. It will remain open to the public through the end of August.

The opening has been timed to coincide with three anniversaries. This year marks 50 years since Seychelles' independence, 50 years of diplomatic relations between Seychelles and Russia, and the 250th anniversary of the Bolshoi Theatre itself. Organizers say the exhibition was arranged specifically around these dates.

For Seychelles, the exhibition is something of a coup. The Bolshoi Theatre Museum has never before exhibited on the African continent, and its arrival in Victoria gives the island nation a moment of cultural visibility that's rare for a country its size. It also underscores a relationship between Seychelles and Russia that goes back half a century, at a time when cultural exchange between the two countries has been getting more attention.

Details on ticketing and opening-day events had not been made public at the time of writing. The exhibition runs at the National Library in Victoria from July 28 until the end of August 2026.s.
